The problem with Aldi
Hundreds of people are dying on our roads in truck crashes every year. Big companies like Aldi are part of the problem – but they won’t own up to it or change their ways.
It is marked by alarming rates of death, injury and chronic health conditions, wage theft and pressures to work dangerously.
This is because of the squeeze on transport contracts from wealthy clients at the top of supply chains, and the dragging down of standards through the exploitative gig economy.
When transport operators and drivers are squeezed, it puts pressure on them to skip or delay vehicle maintenance and repairs, stay on the road too long, speed and skip rest breaks.
Truck crashes are leaving families and communities devastated.
Recently, transport workers won a world-first system to set enforceable standards in transport, including in the transport gig economy. We intend to use these laws to hold wealthy clients to account and lift pay and conditions for all transport workers. At the same time, TWU members are standing together to create a safer, fairer industry.
