TWU is the union for gig workers

TWU is the union for gig workers.

The Transport Workers’ Union is the largest collective organisation for transport workers across road transport, delivery and aviation. We represent thousands of app-based gig workers in the rideshare, food delivery and parcel delivery sectors. We unite gig workers across Australia to fight for fair pay, safety and work rights.

Our plan to lift standards in the gig economy.

TWU gig members have been fighting to reform Australia’s transport industry. In 2024, our relentless fight culminated in a historic victory, securing world-leading rights for gig workers under the transport reform.

These rights are a powerful tool that TWU gig members have begun using to end long-running exploitation, improve pay and conditions, and ensure gig workers have work rights, much like employees at a workplace.

Under transport reform, gig workers have won:

Union representation.

Right to be protected against unfair deactivations.

Ability to make applications to improve pay and conditions in the FWC

Have their say throughout the process of improving their pay and conditions.

From February 26, 2025, landmark protections against unfair deactivations are kicking-in.

Read more about your rights and protections under the unfair deactivation code.

TWU gig members have begun using these laws to improve the gig economy.

Identifying the critical and urgent needs of gig workers across Australia, TWU members have already made urgent standards applications with the Fair Work Commission.

We’ve made two applications for food and parcel delivery workers, and we’re on track for applying the third one for rideshare drivers.

Here are the first applications we’ve made already.

Across the roads and the skies, we carry Australia.

We are a union of 60,000+ members right across road transport and aviation, throughout all states and across all sectors.

Some of TWU members’ big wins include:

  • Qantas agrees to establish a compensation pool of $120 million for illegally sacked workers.
  • Jetstar cabin crew set to receive pay increases of over $8000 under Same Job Same Pay laws won by TWU members.
  • Wage theft categorised a criminal offence.
  • 23% pay increases at Cleanaway with new bargaining laws.
  • Record Award increases.
  • Real wage growth after a decade of stagnation.
