Transport Reform Next Steps

Transport reform laws are here.

Recently laws that TWU members have campaigned for over 20 years to win came into effect.

Watch this documentary of members’ two-decade fight for a better industry.

Here’s how the laws will work

Road Transport Division: we've won a dedicated Road Transport Division of the Fair Work Commission.

Automatic rights: some automatic rights will apply from February, like protections against unfair contracts, and unfair deactivations for gig workers.

Setting standards: we can also set standards through varying Awards, minimum standards orders, collective agreements and contract chain provisions to hold clients to account.

Worker voices: the TWU has been appointed to a Road Transport Advisory Group, which will chair subcommittees to consult on standards and provide advice to the Fair Work Commission.

What first?

With decades of inaction, there’s a lot of work to do to lift standards across Australia’s deadliest industry. That will take time.

We’re working to identify key priorities for urgent standards applications, based on:

  • Critical needs
  • Impact on the industry as a whole
  • Ability to deliver quickly and efficiently, with support from industry participants

Here are the first applications we’ve made to start making the industry safer and fairer.

Meanwhile, we're building to an industry fight in 2026 where we'll bring road transport and aviation together for the first time.

This is just the start.

Across the roads and the skies, we carry Australia.

The next stage in our fight will bring together aviation and road transport for the first time ever.

With our combined strength and simultaneous bargaining in 2026, we will have the power to hold clients to account and lift standards right across the transport industry, with transport reform laws a powerful tool in our arsenal.
